The Club

Lake Oswego Community Rowing (LOCR) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that operates from the Charlie S. Brown Water Sports Center on the Willamette River. LOCR is the only rowing club in the SW Portland area that offers Learn to Row, experienced, and competitive rowing programs for both youth and adult rowers.

Our Mission

LOCR aims to provide our SW Portland area community affordable access to the sport of rowing for competitive and recreational athletes of all ages (11+).  

Your Role

The Director of Rowing (DoR) is the chief coach and primary operations officer for the club and is in charge of day-to-day operations as well as implementing strategies in furtherance of the club’s vision for the future. The position requires coaching and administrative leadership as this person implements and oversees the rowing programs at LOCR.  

Candidate Requirements 

  1. Exceptional, demonstrated coaching ability across both youth and masters programs, supporting athletes with goals ranging from recreation and fitness to high-level competitive. 

  2. Able to mentor and manage full and part-time coaching staff members.

  3. Able to organize and work with volunteers to ensure volunteer efforts and special skills/knowledge are well employed to support the needs of LOCR.

  4. Comfortable working on or supervising club administrative tasks, including collaboration with the club treasurer, club administrator, and/or volunteer board members.  

  5. Committed to building a strong, enduring positive impact on LOCR and its rowers.

  6. Interest and practical knowledge of shell rigging and basic maintenance.

  7. Ability to drive/tow rowing shells to regional regattas. 

  8. Ability to obtain all required certifications within 6 months.

  9. Basic computer/software knowledge and skills to effectuate club business.

Job Responsibilities & Duties


I. Head Coach & Athletic Development (Rowing Program Leadership)

  • Serve as Head Coach for one of our major rowing programs, directly providing membership with consistent and high-quality coaching. 

  • Curriculum & Program Oversight: Direct, supervise, and align all LOCR rowing programs, establishing cohesive training plans for the Youth Team, Middle School, Masters, and Learn to Row programs.

  • Athlete-Centric Mentorship: Foster a positive, healthy environment focused on athletic progress, sportsmanship, academic success, and personal growth.

  • Regatta Coordination & Logistics: Establish the annual regatta calendar. Oversee event logistics, including race entries, travel arrangements, parent/volunteer coordination, and safe transport of the shell trailer.

  • Culture & Values: Cultivate a unified club culture that emphasizes teamwork, integrity, accountability, and collaboration among athletes, staff, and volunteers.

II. Director & Club Operations (Administrative Leadership)

  • Board Liaison & Reporting: Attend LOCR Board of Directors meetings as an ex-officio (non-voting) member. Provide comprehensive operational reports, tracking program trends, registration metrics, staffing updates, and equipment/facility needs.

  • Staff Recruitment & Management: Recruit, hire, schedule, and supervise all assistant coaches and program staff. Oversee payroll administration, including timesheet reviews, certification verifications, and ongoing performance management.

  • Financial Stewardship: Assist in developing the annual operating budget, track programmatic expenses, and manage club resources responsibly.

  • Stakeholder Communication: Coordinate day-to-day communication across the organization. Act as the primary point of contact for coaches, parents, athletes, and key municipal partners, including the City of Lake Oswego and the Lake Oswego School District (LOSD).

  • Community Outreach & Fundraising: Partner with the Fundraising Committee to support campaigns and events. Lead outreach initiatives to promote LOCR, drive recruitment, and expand access to rowing in the community.

III. Safety, Compliance & Facilities Management

  • Safety & Compliance Standards: Maintain the highest safety standards at all times. Ensure strict adherence to USRowing rules, SafeSport protocols, and LOCR’s internal Safety Guidelines and Handbooks.

  • Incident Management: Promptly address and document any injuries, safety incidents, or disputes, keeping the Board President fully apprised of resolutions.

  • Boathouse & Equipment Care: Supervise and execute a rigorous, preventative maintenance schedule for all LOCR assets, including shells, oars, launches, safety gear, and club vehicles.

Asset & Facility Upkeep: Maintain a clean, organized, and secure footprint at the Charlie S. Brown Water Sports Center. Facilitate equipment repairs or replacements within budget boundaries defined by the approved Annual Budget.
